We opened our doors for the first time on Monday this week. As the clocked showed 5:30pm, we were racing around trying to make sure everything was perfect. The sweat running down our backs wasn't from a recent workout, it wasn't from the last minute cleaning, it was from the realization that tonight was the night. Tonight was the night we would would open our doors to the public for the first time ever. We wanted it all to be perfect, but we also were nervous to see if anyone would join us for our Monday night WOD. To our amazement people did come, people did workout, and people liked it. It was an intense two hours for us, because we wanted to be sure everyone saw what we see, we wanted all those who walked through our doors to love CrossFit as much as we do. When we shut the doors that night, we both looked at each other and smiled. We maybe even teared up a little. We couldn't believe all the people who came through the door. We couldn't believe our friends who were there to support us. We were in awe.
Every night this week we have had the pleasure of meeting new people, learning about their fitness journey, and seeing how CrossFit could fit into their lives. We knew this journey was going to be amazing - but we had no idea how amazing. As we plan for our Grand Opening tomorrow, we can sweat a little less knowing that people will come, people will like it, and although CrossFit may not be for everyone, there are many people who will think it is Awesome - just like us!
So I'm not very good at envisioning things in my head when it comes to design and layout. I usually leave that up to my wife, or our neighbor and good friend who happens to be an interior designer. But today it all started to take shape for me. Our electrician called me today while we were out shopping for our son's birthday gift (he turns 5 tomorrow) and he informed me that he was nearly done but had a couple hours of work left in the morning. I told him I would swing by and check things out and drop off the light bulbs he needed. I later walked in and saw our CrossFit gym for the very first time to its full potential! I was giddy like my son the night before his birthday. The drop ceiling had been removed, the lights had been raised as high as they could move them, the sprinkler heads had also been moved it, the space looked so much bigger! There's still some work to be done but we are getting there. The ceiling will be painted white next week and then we can finally put our paint on the walls. Our flooring was ordered two days ago and is scheduled to be delivered on July 1st! We are extremely excited to start putting the finishing touches in place. It's hard to believe our open house is just around the corner! Kristy and I converse quite often about how excited we are to share our dream and passion for CrossFit with everyone. Having the right space, being in the right location, making the best improvements to the building and having the right equipment is all so very important to our ability to share our dream. I am so happy to see that it is all coming together......
Today we spent the day watching some of the most talented athletes in the world at the CrossFit Central Super Regionals in Minneapolis. It is both motivating and humbling to say the least! Sadly as we watched the final womens heat for event 3 we watched as Julie Foucher injured her ankle. It is an injury that could have happened to anyone. Be it a Football player, tennis player or anyone of us just rolling an ankle. In the video here, she talks about wanting to finish th...e weekend if they will let her, just for fun. Julie went on to compete in event 4 and 5. She completed the 250 Foot handstand walk in 2:17.1 with a boot on!!! She finished in 11th place overall for that event. The remarkable part of all of this isn't that she got hurt and went back out. Its that CrossFit enabled her to train both mentally and physically to overcome adversity and forge on. This is a huge testament to what CrossFit can do for EVERYONE! By training for the known and unknowable you can do anything you put your mind to!!! By the way, Julie is a med student set to graduate in 2017 from the Cleveland Clinic Lerner College of medicine.
Today felt like Christmas in the Anderson house! We had two pallets of Rogue equipment delivered (a trial run for the big order coming in July), we got our business cards in the mail, our first batch of T-shirts delivered by courier and we picked up our keys to the future Crosswinds CrossFit. It is funny how some things that are so small, can feel so big in our world. Although there is still a lot of work that needs to be done in the space for it to be ready for our July opening, we couldn't help but take the kids up there and do some cleaning and breaking in of the place! They played on their ipods while we cleaned the water fountains, they ran circles around the floor, as we imagined where our rig would go, and lastly we ate dinner where our community will grow. Looking forward to many more days like this!
Well well well....... here I sit on a Saturday night. At my parents house. On their couch. Working on my computer. WHAT HAS HAPPENED TO MY LIFE!!!! Hold on, wait, oh yea.....wife, two kids, i hit my 30's and reality occurred! Then we decided to give this CrossFit stuff a shot.
So here I sit on Saturday night, looking at my dad sleeping in his chair, my mom reading her book and my wife actually taking a break from work for once. The kids are passed out for the night. And here I am, pricing out equipment and getting Wodify up and running. Ten years ago I would not have nor could I have ever imagined a Saturday night like tonight. But as I sit here being a keyboard warrior, listening to the rain outside and thinking about how truly lucky I am. I wouldn't have it any other way.
Every time I get frustrated with how time consuming this venture has been, I think about my ROI. ROI means Return on Investment for those of you who don't come from corporate America. Some of you right now are probably like oh he's just in it for the money...... NO, I'm talking about a much bigger ROI, I'm talking about our future community of CrossFitters and how rewarding it is to see everyones face every day. How awesome it is to watch normal folks do extraordinary things everyday! How watching my kids do air squats and burpees just because Mommy and Daddy do it is freaking awesome! I could go on and on but you get the point.
I'm beyond excited about our Box and its future, and thats why every last second spent working and putting it all together is worth it....and then some! Big things are happening, big changes, roll with it and ride it out! I can't wait to see where we can take Crosswinds CrossFit!!!!
Today we walked through our future Box one more time before construction begins. Man its ugly right now!
So our future Box is an old Anytime Fitness space. I'm not sure who picks out the paint colors but if its someone in corporate they should be fired! I'm no decor connoisseur but wow.....if I think its bad its gotta be bad!
It is hard to imagine how different it will look when it is all done, but it is going to be pretty badass! The drop ceiling will be removed, the HVAC will be modified to look very cool and industrial, and the two garage doors that are coming...Let's just say I can't wait to see it all come together.
We still can't figure out why anyone would have painted the walls the colors they are now - but we do know we can't choose anything worse! Its funny how the sense of ownership just explodes once the lease is signed, it took everything in my power to not start tearing the place apart to get things rolling!
After looking at a lot of different space in the Lakeville area, we think we have found the right space. It's so much harder than I ever imagined to find space that is available, zoned the right way, and have other tenants in the building who are okay with a CrossFit gym next door. Now if we can just get our lawyers to agree on the terms of our lease, we may be able to open our gym mid summer!
After four weeks of waiting, we found out today our Affiliate was approved!
It is absolutely amazing to know we are one step closer to our dream becoming a reality. It's hard to believe that some people have to wait almost five months to get approved because of the naming process. Finding the right name can be the hardest part! So why did we pick CROSSWINDS CROSSFIT... When you go to open your gym you look at anything and everything for inspiration. The hardest part is that all the "cool" names are taken, and HQ has set some new standards for the naming process.
So how do you come up with your own name and have it be catchy, cool, hip, different, awesome and ok you get the point....... Well, you dig deep, you figure out what the hell matters in life and how you've made it this far. I can't tell you the exact number of texts Kristy and I exchanged throwing out this name and that name. You think about whats real, about whats unique and about whats "cool."
Well, one day while leaving my in-laws house and driving by the park across the street, Kristy said "what about Crosswinds CrossFit?" My response, "No, thats stupid." About a week later, I was realizing we really needed to come up with our name. I decided that "Crosswinds" had much more meaning to me than I realized. I won't get into too many specifics but it dawned on me that it really was the perfect name! So I did what any good husband would do, I went to Kristy and acted like the name Crosswinds CrossFit was my idea! Just kidding, I admitted it was a great name for us and told her how right she was! So our name was born...CROSSWINDS CROSSFIT...BOOM!
