JIM
I remember walking in to Papa Murphy’s one day to get dinner for the family and noticed a new gym under construction next door. I kept an eye on the progress every time I was heading in to pick up the family Friday night pizza dinner. After just moving to Minnesota, I was looking for a gym to join because I desperately needed to make a change in my life and get my health under control. Years of little to no activity had led to high blood pressure, high cholesterol and a slew of other major health issues that needed to be reversed, and soon. I had heard of CrossFit but thought it was only for those who were already in shape and that I would just hurt myself. After talking to a couple friends who are crossfitter’s, I decided to give this gym next to Papa Murphy’s a try. I got signed up for a free trial and signed up for a full membership immediately after that trial. CrossFit was the fitness program I was looking for and desperately needed.
When I first started I was more than 70lbs overweight, couldn’t do a box jump, couldn’t run, and struggled to get through even the warm ups without wanting to find the green bucket. After a couple of months going 3 days a week, I started to move better and started to see the weight come off, after 7 months I was going 4 days a week and competed in my first CrossFit Open, after a year I was 50 lbs. lighter, doing most workouts as prescribed, and was working on becoming a coach.
Crosswinds Crossfit has become part of my family’s life, a home away from home. As a coach, I love being able to give back to a community that has given so much to me and my family. As an athlete, I continue to push myself to be better than I was yesterday and this drive and determination emanates across all other aspects of my life. I am looking forward to continuing to strive to meet my goals and continuing to set new goals, like muscle ups, with the support of the coaches and athletes I have come to consider part of my family.
