Brittney

My CrossFit journey began once I moved to Minnesota after graduating college at the end of 2015.  In desperate need of getting in shape I decided to make a last-ditch effort and try something completely different with the hopes that I would actually stick with it.  Not knowing many people in the area or having many connections was also difficult so I figured maybe I would be able to meet some people this way too.  My first day at Crosswinds CrossFit was nerve wrecking as I wasn’t quite sure what to expect or how the members would perceive me.  You hear all of the stereotypes about CrossFit from “that’s like joining a cult” to “you’re going to get bulky”, but to me I really just wanted to feel good about myself again.  During the first class, everyone introduced themselves and was very welcoming.  Dan, the owner, and coach that day told me to push myself, but also told me that it is okay to scale the movements and showed me the proper way to do so. That same day I signed up and told Dan to take my money because if I left without signing up I knew I would chicken out or find an excuse not to come back.  I was definitely sore the next day or two but knew that this was the right routine for me and that I had to stick with it.

Over the first couple of months I found the progress to be slow, I hadn’t made quite as many connections as I would have liked and a lot of the movements were tough, but I continued and increased the number of days that I actually showed up for class.  It was a struggle to make it to 5:30am sometimes, but somehow, I managed to train my body to wake up that early and get my butt to Crosswinds.

Fast forward to today where I am stronger than I have ever been and healthier too!  I never would have thought that I would be able to run more than 800 meters during a workout or be able to even finish a 40-minute workout, but I have achieved it.  Every day is about pushing myself and trying to increase my performance for each workout.  I am a strong believer that the more you put in to each day the more you get out of it in the long run.  I have a long way to go, but the progress I have made is so encouraging and keeps me coming back for more!

My favorite part about Crosswinds is the community.  So yes, I guess you could say we are like a cult because how I define cult as a group of people who work out together, end up being friends that give each other words of encouragement and support, challenge each other, and even hang out outside of CrossFit.  I have met so many great people at Crosswinds and always enjoy seeing others progress as well as my own.  I think my Crosswinds family would describe me as being a bit goofy and maybe inappropriate at times, but honestly, I am so happy to be able to be myself 100% of the time.

I couldn’t imagine my life without Crosswinds and the community that I have been so lucky to be a part of.

For anyone on the fence about joining I would encourage you to just come to one class, you won’t regret it.  It is not as scary or as crazy as the stereotypes make it out to be, plus it is good for you!
